Following the decision on 26 September 2006 by the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency to allocate RS as the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Serbia IANA assigned .rs as ccTLD for this country This decision followed the June 2006 split of Serbia and Montenegro into two separate countries. Along with the Montenegrin ME, RS replaces the code YU which was assigned to the former Serbia and Montenegro as a legal successor of Yugoslavia, which was the original holder of YU domain.
On July 8, 2006, the Registry for National Internet Domain of Serbia - RNIDS was founded by the Ministry of Science and a group of 34 organizations interested in the domain.
ICANN has resolved that the former .yu domain is to be operated temporarily by the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names, the operators of the new .rs domain registry, until its eventual abolition on or before 30 September 2009.
This allows a two-year transition period for existing .yu names to be transferred either to .me (which is to be delegated to the Government of Montenegro) or to .rs (for Serbian domains).
The delegation of name servers by IANA is in process of population, as of September 26, 2007.
The letters of .rs stand for Republika Srbija (Serbian: Republic of Serbia). Registration of the domain names with .rs extension commenced on March 10, 2008.

Time ZoneCET (UTC+1) - Summer (DST) CEST (UTC+2) Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a landlocked country in Central- and Southeastern Europe, covering the southern part of the Pannonian Plain an the central part of the Balkans. Serbia is bordered by Hungary to the north; Romania and Bulgaria to the east; the Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the south; and Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the west. The country's capital, Belgrade, was titled "City of the Future of South Europe" in 2006.
For centuries, located at, and shaped by, the cultural boundaries between the East and the West, a powerful medieval kingdom later renamed the Serbian Empire occupied much of the Balkans. The Serbian state disappeared by the mid-16th century torn by domestic feuds, Ottoman-, Venetian-, Hungarian- and later, Austrian occupations. The success of the Serbian revolution in 1817 marked the birth of modern Serbia, centered in the umadija region. Within a century it reacquired Kosovo and Metohija, Raka region and Vardar Macedonia from the Ottoman Empire. Likewise, in 1918 the former autonomous Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina proclaimed its secession from Austria-Hungary to unite with the Serbia, preceded by the Syrmia region.
