Some use in Vanuatu, and a number of sites unrelated to Vanuatu as well
.vu is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Vanuatu. The .vu domain has been delegated to Telecom Vanuatu Limited (TVL). TVL has been working together with the VU Network Information Centre (vuNIC) in handling the domain since 1998. The domain is run closely following the guidelines set by the Internet Assigned Names Authority (IANA). TVL and the vuNIC both operate in the interests of the people of Vanuatu and reserve the right to decline and terminate applications that could be used to damage the VU domain. Should an agreement be revoked after the domain has been delegated, the customer will receive notification by email and will receive a pro-rata refund of the original registration charge.
The VU domain registry runs a strict anti spamming policy on all its domains. In purchasing a VU domain, you agree to not use the site for the purpose of unsolicited bulk emails and excessive levels of spamming. In the event of these activities being carried out on a VU domain, TVL will contact the registered owner insisting that they cease using their domain for this purpose. TVL may revoke the domain registration if they deem it necessary to preserve the integrity of the VU Top-level Domain.
The customer may use their domain as soon as they complete the registration process. However, the registration will be officially completed as soon the customer receives an email from TVL confirming that their payment was successful.
The VU domain has now been running for many years and has remained stable. Although the Vanuatu TLD is not part of the gTLD scheme (generic top-level domain), it will continue to run unaffected by upcoming changes and additions regarding the domain name system.
The vuNIC has reserved a number of VU domain names for copyright and trademark purposes. Should you discover that the domain you wish to register is one of these reserved domains, you may contact the vuNIC for further information at email@example.com. Other than the reserved domains, all others are available to be registered on a first come first served basis.
Some domain names may be classified by the registry as a premium domain name and will command a higher price. If you request a premium domain name we will contact you before completing your order.
In addition, the registry may at any time reserve domain names from registration or the sale may be restricted to comply with ICANN requirements.
While .vu domains were initially given away for free to any person requesting one, they are now being sold commercially as is common practice for other top-level domains.
Several organizations, most notably the German language "registrar" de|nic|vu (a division of Sektion.net, itself a division of Interdots International) are still giving away subdomains for free and promising to keep the service ad-free and free of charge.
