Background

.bv is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bouvet Island. The island is an unpopulated territory of Norway that lies in the South Atlantic Sea to the southwest of South Africa. It is described as one of the remote places on Earth. Norid administers the domain; they are also the registry for the Norway top level domain .no.

The domains for Bouvet Island and Jan-Mayen (.sj) were delegated to Norid in 1997. Currently Norway's domain naming policy does not allow any registrations under the .bv and .sj domains. They will remain unused and kept for potential future use. Although these domains are inactive, they remain allocated TLD's which can still be used should the policy change.

As Bouvet Island is an uninhabited Norwegian territory, Norid decided it made more sense keeping the .bv domain for future use and recommending the use of the .no domain instead. The Norwegian Ministry of Transport and communications backs this domain name policy as does the Norwegian government. Norid works diligently to ensure that Norwegian Internet services are available worldwide.

The .no domain is hugely popular in Norway with 91% of companies and organisations using it as their primary domain. With around 400 registrars licensed by Norid, the number of .no domain registrations has multiplied roughly tenfold every third year since 1991.
