Is your domain name working hard enough?

Currently, whether you have registered a .com or a .co.uk domain there are no restrictions if you would like to register both versions of your domain name - and many people do!.

Of course, the choice is all a matter of your preference - .com is often regarded as "International" where the .co.uk domain is deemed to be "UK only", usually it depends on the target market.

Whilst, the .com domain is recognised world wide, it is easier to remember and to type, and there is a whole world full of people who could register it before you do!

If your target is primarily the UK market then registering just the .co.uk domain would seem to be the obvious choice. The .co.uk instantly identifies you as a UK company and often, given a list of URLs in a search engine, people will choose a domain / URL with their country code. Therefore, it follows that if you want to extend your target market then registering your domain with other country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) will expand your target audience.

Registering both .com and .co.uk (and others such as .at, .dk, .es, .eu, .ie, .it, .nz, .se etc) domain names in fact makes very good sense - it stops anyone else from registering your name and leaves it ready for you to use either right away or in the future. Background

.tr is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Turkey.

It is administered by Nic.tr who has been registering ".tr" internet names since 1991 in the Computer Center of Middle East Technical University, which had provided the first internet connection to the country, with the guidance of IANA and ICANN.

The policies and procedures in terms of ".tr" domain name registration were constituted and executed by the Computer Center of Middle East Technical University from 1991 to 1998. Since 1998 it has operated as an individual department due to the increasing work load.

The purpose of Nic.tr is to issue and manage all the domestic and overseas applications for ".tr" country code Top Level Domain and to conclude the registration if the application is appropriate. Nic.tr also provide customer support through e-mail and phone during the domain name operations as well as handling all the administrative, financial and technical services regarding the ".tr" domain space.

Since 2006 it is possible to use the Turkish characters ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş and ü in a domain name and in 2007 Nic.tr became a member of the Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries (CENTR).

The table below shows the available second level domains under the domain name ".tr":

".com.tr", ".biz.tr" and ".info.tr" Are sub-domain names for individuals and organizations involved in commercial activities-according to certificate;
".net.tr" is a sub-domain name for institutions and organizations which offer internet supply services, value-added wide-scale services such as web, portal, scanning, e-mail, etc. over the internet and application supply services;
".org.tr" is a sub-domain name for institutions and organizations such as foundations, associations, NGOs and alike;
".web.tr" and ".gen.tr" are sub-domain names for which individual and organizational applications (general) can be made and the allocation is made on a "first come, first served" and "domain name-individual/organization relation is not required" basis;
".edu.tr" is a sub-domain name for Turkish higher education institutes that are recognized by Higher Education Council (YÖK).
".mil.tr" is a sub-domain name for the Turkish military institutions and organizations;
".gov.tr" is a sub-domain name for Turkish governmental organizations and institutions;
".tel.tr" is a sub-domain name that can be allotted to individuals and organizations residing in Turkey, related with all kinds of the telephone numbers that they use in Turkey

".bbs.tr" is a sub-domain name for institutions and organizations offering BBS (Bulletin Board System) services;

".nc.tr" is used as a second-level domain for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, as it has no country code assigned.

A few of these above mentioned sub-domain names does not require any documents from the applicant, for instance: ".web.tr" and ".gen.tr". However, if one wants to apply for a sub-domain name such as ".com.tr", ".biz.tr", ".info.tr", ".org.tr", ".net.tr", ".org.tr", ".com.tr", ".info.tr", ".biz.tr", ".gov.tr", ".bbs.tr", ".bel.tr", ".av.tr", ".k12.tr", ".edu.tr", ".pol.tr" or ".mil.tr" then the appropriate documents needs to be attached to the application. Though please note that if a ".tr" registration application is based on foreign originated documents, the applicant will be requested to prove that the name it has chosen as the domain name is either used in Turkey by the rightful owner or that they are in business venture. In other words, applicants must show business activity in Turkey or have business relationship with a company which is present in Turkey. Otherwise it is not possible for a foreign individual or company to register ".tr" domain name.
