Is your domain name working hard enough?
Currently, whether you have registered a .com or a .co.uk domain there are no restrictions if you would like to register both versions of your domain name - and many people do!.
Of course, the choice is all a matter of your preference - .com is often regarded as "International" where the .co.uk domain is deemed to be "UK only", usually it depends on the target market.
Whilst, the .com domain is recognised world wide, it is easier to remember and to type, and there is a whole world full of people who could register it before you do!
If your target is primarily the UK market then registering just the .co.uk domain would seem to be the obvious choice. The .co.uk instantly identifies you as a UK company and often, given a list of URLs in a search engine, people will choose a domain / URL with their country code. Therefore, it follows that if you want to extend your target market then registering your domain with other country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) will expand your target audience.
Registering both .com and .co.uk (and others such as .at, .dk, .es, .eu, .ie, .it, .nz, .se etc) domain names in fact makes very good sense - it stops anyone else from registering your name and leaves it ready for you to use either right away or in the future. Background
.mt is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Malta. The University of Malta was awarded the authority of the ccTLD ".mt" by IANA in 1992 At that time the University delegated responsibility to a committee constituted for the purpose whose activities included creation and implementation of a domain naming policy for ".mt", promotion of the ".mt" domain, maintenance of the ".mt" nameservers and of course registration of new domain names. In 1999 this commitee received formal status as the Malta Internet Foundation, also known as NIC(Malta).
Today NIC(Malta) works in the same way as the British Nominet or the German DENIC.
The ".mt" top-level domain (TLD) is partitioned into second-level domains (SLDs) intended to serve a particular sector e.g. ".com.mt" (commercial sector), edu.mt (educational sector) etc. To maintain the integrity of this structure, registration of domains directly under .mt is not allowed. Registration of new domain names must be made under one of the following SLDs:
".com.mt" - operate on a commercial basis
".org.mt" - operate on a non-profit basis
".net.mt" - be a provider of Internet related network services e.g. ISPs
".edu.mt" - be an education institution recognized by Ministry of Education in Malta
Registration of domains under ".gov.mt" are not done through NIC(Malta). The Government of Malta contact for registrations under ".gov.mt" is Mr Rodney Naudi, Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA).
In all above cases the prospective Holder is required to declare the right to use the name preceding the SLD of the proposed domain name as a Full Trade Mark or Trade or Business Name in accordance with Maltese Law - e.g. to register "xyz.com.mt" the prospective Holder must declare the right to use the name "xyz" as a Full Trade Mark or Trade or Business Name in accordance with Maltese Law. There is no requirement for the Holder to be established in Malta apart from what is specified earlier.
