Is your domain name working hard enough?
Currently, whether you have registered a .com or a .co.uk domain there are no restrictions if you would like to register both versions of your domain name - and many people do!.
Of course, the choice is all a matter of your preference - .com is often regarded as "International" where the .co.uk domain is deemed to be "UK only", usually it depends on the target market.
Whilst, the .com domain is recognised world wide, it is easier to remember and to type, and there is a whole world full of people who could register it before you do!
If your target is primarily the UK market then registering just the .co.uk domain would seem to be the obvious choice. The .co.uk instantly identifies you as a UK company and often, given a list of URLs in a search engine, people will choose a domain / URL with their country code. Therefore, it follows that if you want to extend your target market then registering your domain with other country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) will expand your target audience.
Registering both .com and .co.uk (and others such as .at, .dk, .es, .eu, .ie, .it, .nz, .se etc) domain names in fact makes very good sense - it stops anyone else from registering your name and leaves it ready for you to use either right away or in the future. Background
The ccTLD for Latvia is .lv. It is administrated by the Network Solutions Department of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia. This authority to manage the ccTLD .lv was given the them by IANA, also known as the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, in 1993. Since this time, it has been managed by NIC as an importable part of the global naming system for the Internet community. The operator began a new liberal domain name registration policy on the 1st of July, 2009.
When naming a .lv domain name, the following rules should be taken into consideration:
- A maximum of 63 characters is allowed and a minimum of 2. This does not include the 'http://www.' or '.lv'.
- Permitted characters are the roman alphabet 'a-z', these being case sensitive.
- The only special character that can be used is the hyphen (-), but this cannot be put at the beginning or end of the domain name.
It applying for a .lv domain name, it is advised that you do so directly in the ccTLD .lv, for example on 'bb-online.lv'.
There are several generic second-level domain names of .lv and they are as follows:
- .com.lv: For Commercial use.
- .edu.lv: For Educational Institutions.
- .gov.lv: For Government and Semi-Government entities, this certain sub-domain being registered by VITA.
- .org.lv: For Various different forms of Affiliation groups.
- .mil.lv: For use by the Military of Defence.
- .id.lv: For use by Individual people.
- .net.lv: For use by Network Infrastructure providers.
- .asn.lv: For Associations.
- .conf.lv: For Conferences and exhibitions, those which require short duration connectivity.
When you have applied for a .lv domain name and are able to use it, you do not take ownership of this domain name. It is not property yet you simply get given rights to use the domain name. The minimum amount of time you can register the .lv ccTLD is one year. You can be given the right to use an unlimited amount of domain names, but you need to keep with the according policies for these names which are set by the Network Solutions Department of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia.
Registrations are open for all foreign applicants, but preference is given to domestic users. This does not take much importance as it is shown by statistics that most users of this domain name are from Latvia except for some exceptions with Las Vegas. .lv stands well for Las Vegas.
